Me and Daniel cranked this thing out last night. One of his bikes and one of mine. The welds are ugly as fuck, but its sturdy. Taking it to the mill on saturday because the chain has a problem. It should sit on one gear, but it's a little bit too loose for that one so as you ride it jumps up to the next one, but it's waaaay to tight on the next one. We junked the derailers so we can't just shift it back either. Oh, and we haven't done the brakes so stopping requires a bit a planning.

-------------------------------------
Got more on the way, too. Plus I'm sure I'll end up buying more.
Also, I just traded for a sweet blue and white beach cruiser that only needs minimum repair - new tube, handle bar grips and perhaps a bit of paint.
-------------------------------------
Reviews of records I bought at Bamalama:
Terrible Twos 12" - Most of the songs they played live. I wouldn't mind if it sounded a bit dirtier, but it's hard to catch that sound on tape these days. It's good though. Very good.
Terrible Twos 7" - This one is much grimier. 3 songs on each side! The songs aren't really as good though. Still good. Very good.
Amber Alerts/Wizard Sleeve 7" - Amber Alerts side is good, but I heard better songs at the show. Recording quality is...okay. Wizard Sleeve side is good, but I haven't listended to it much yet. I was pleasantly surprised though.
The Feeling of Love 7" - VERY GOOD. I didn't really expect much from this. Live, they had great songs and less-than-great songs, so I was taking a gamble, but this record is much more interesting than I though it would be. It seems to have circuit bent drums and plenty of funky time and processing. Excellent.
--------------------------------------
Heading to tuscaloosa today, then florida for the rest of the week. FuckYeahFest is at the BottleTree tomorrow. I've never listened to any of the bands before today, but I checked them out and they all seemed cool - especially Matt&Kim.
--------------------------------------
Which reminds me, I trying to swap out my ax-80 for another budget mono. Looking at Yamaha CS's and Roland SH's. Anybody want to buy or trade (I doubt it)? |

| idea/thrift |
[Jun. 2nd, 2008|09:20 pm] |
New idea for live performance. I've been experimenting with a one-man-band rig that goes like this. Footpedal triggering MG-1 on a bass drum patch. The trigger is attached to the heel area of my kick drum pedal on my simmons kit. The kick trigger is wired to the snare triger-in on my Simmons Trixer. So heel: bassdrum; toe: snare. Then I play bass though some nice chunky fucking distortion. Telephone mic, too. It's a good combination, and I think with some practice I can write some songs and play some shows.
----------
I've also been doing well with the thrift stores. Got some good games like rampage for NES, sonic 1 (common as fuck I know), and some wrestlin game for n64. Great condition purple n64 controller too.
Picked up a shitty old metronome at a yard sale. I was hoping I could use the headphone output to trigger my MG-1 or simmons, but I can't. Any idea why?
Oh, and a strobe light.
OH OH OH, and an SK-1 with a case and manual in great shape for $5!!!! |

Also, I just won an auction for a DR-110 drum machine at less the $80. It's all birth day money and such. I'm planning on getting a patchbay too.
-----
Oh yeah, and my friend, Jacob, is appearently just going to GIVE me a Korg ES-1! What awesome!

Oh yeah, and I got a daisy chain power supply finally.

| Realistic Electronic Reverb/DOD 585/MR-10/ax-80/pharmacy |
[Mar. 19th, 2008|08:45 pm] |
So my Realistic Electronic Reverb showed up. I was surprised to find that it had the original box, styrofoam, and manuals. Neato! It's good fun. Then I decided to check my old one and see what was wrong with it. It actually still works, just very shakily. I had them hooked up in series running my mg-1 through for a while.
--------------------
But then, I went to guitar bob's and got that damn power supply I needed for my dod585. It's alot of fun, but it's really quirky. 3 controls. mix crossfades dry and wet. All the way over to wet and you can't even hear the dry signal. repeat goes into self oscillation around 7. time from left to right is longest to shortest. It's goes short enough to just thicken, but it doesn't really go very long. I mean, it's not too short, I just wish it went longer. Also between 1 and 4 nothing really happens. Oh, and if I exceed some volume threshold it will turn off, but the threshold is pretty high so it's not that big of a deal. Total price including wierd power supply: $50.
---------------------
Also, while in bob's, I found another new gem he got in. The Yamaha MR-10!! ( http://www.keyboardmuseum.org/d_machines/mr10.html ). I asked how much and he said $60, but I'm gonna go down, test it out (try to make it sound shitty with bad eqing, etc.), and offer him $40. I might still be willing to shell out $60, but I'd feel much better about $40.
----------------------
I forgot to talk about how sweet the ax-80 is. I love it quite a bit. It's great fun and it's super easy to program. great low end. My only beef is that there are no noise waveforms and there's no random modulation. Still sounds great though.
-----------------------
The Pharmacy show tomorrow should be pretty rad.....go there. |

| Akai AX-80 for $250!!/DOD powersupply/KPII/Reason |
[Mar. 7th, 2008|02:45 pm] |

So my relentless craigslist-checking has finally paid off. I spotted an Akai AX-80 (estimated value: $500ish) for $250 on there. I called the person up and they were like "yeah, I got this 'digital piano' and I never really got into it". LULZ@digital piano. I'm so stoked 2VCO (maybe DCO?) with subosc, 3 lfos, 2 adsrs, 2-pole self-oscillating resonant filter with a bass-boost circuit, velocity, etc. Plus these things LOOK awesome with all those little individual screens. I'm so stoked. I cant wait. I'm picking up tomorrow.
-------------------------------------
Also, I decided to cave in and get the official DOD power supply for the Performer 585 delay I bought (and maybe didn't mention). I was going to build one, but the power specifications are wierd. 20v, 20ma, and a 1/4 plug for the head. wtf, dod, wtf. Anyway, there is one at Guitar Bob's for $15 last time I checked. The best price I could find on ebay was $40 after shipping. yeah right.
--------------------------------------
Speaking of power supplies, the psu for my Kaoss Pad II showed up the other day. It's lots of fun, but I forgot how fucking volitile the thing is. With too much input volume it just starts feeding back. Even set up right I have to constantly tweak the input/output volumes and fx depth to keep it stable-sounding. However, if used right, this does allow for some nice overdriving of the filter settings. It's fun, but I would never pay the regular price for this thing. It's just too limited. The little synth sounds are cute, but they've been around too long so they are too cliche in a track and are just taking up patch space. Plus some of the effects are repeated as regular and beat-sync effects. Once again, just taking up space. Then some of the effects suck. At the end of the day have 40 usable effects tops (not including repetitive effects).
----------------------------------------
And finnally, I got a new "totally legitimate" copy of Reason 3.0 for my compy. Reason is cool, but I find it really limiting. I just with I could import vstis and use my qwerty keyboard as the controller. |

| shark vs. hippo |
[Mar. 3rd, 2008|12:50 am] |
Last night's show was pretty awesome I thought. Here's what I brought: Guitar Korg EA-1 Moog MG-1 Alesis Metavox/mic Ibanez DD-700 Ibanez CF-7 Boss PH-3 Boss BF-2 little mixer (pics later)
-----------------
I just bought another Realistic Electronic Reverb to replace the one I fried. If you aren't familiar with it, it's really more of a lo-fi delay with really short timing. It can also be used for distortion by cranking the input volume. I found some mods I'm going to do, too. One is to make the delay time alot longer. The other is to add range to the repeats and you can then push it to self-oscillation. I'm stoked. |

| | Stiff Little Fingers | ] | I just scored a Casio CT-403 at the thrift store for $40. Like these: http://www.jz-server.de/forum/e107_plugins/autogallery/Gallery/CT-403.jpg http://www.legoluft.de/tech/bending/casio-ct-403/ct403a.jpg
I also picked up a game drawer for N64 games. David had ones like it and they hold Sega games too. Maybe SNES? i don't know.
----------------
I would take some real pictures, but I CAN'T FIND MY DAMN CAMERA! My brand, fucking, new camera is missing. I blame the cat! I feel like it has to be somewhere, but since the cat likes to take things and hide them it could be anywhere in the apartment. Seriously, we couldn't find the DVD remote for weeks and then all the sudden it was on the floor. Same things with it's collar, but then it hid it again.
UPDATE: I found my camera! yesssssssssss

| | Standard of Living | ] | So I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but I like things that are really over the top. My newest (re)indulgence is Road Rash 64. Straight up predecessor to GTA3. Premise? You ride a motorcyle in a race. During said race you try to use weapons such as a crowbar, hammer, can of mace, numchucks, pool cue, baseball bat, etc. to knock your opponents off thier motorcycles. Also you get points for doing that. You get extra points for knocking off cops. You have to pay a fine if a cop knocks you off. Extra points for hitting pedestrians too. Did I mention you can ramp off of cars? you can. Beast game ever.
--------------
Did you know you can generate electricity by smashing crystals. Thats how grill ignightors and record needles work. YEAH!
--------------
Did I mention by PH-3 is teh roxor? I think I might buy this bf-2 as well. A patchbay too. They are soooooooooo cheap and would make my life so much easier.

I've been watching a bunch of Salute Your Shorts, Doug, and Hey Arnold! lately. yessssssssssssssssss.

| Hey Tyler, what did you get for xmas?/other new stuff/MG-1 mods/etc. |
[Dec. 28th, 2007|12:07 am] |

and a blanket, roadside emergency kit (has a ratchet set so I'm happy), 15bux, and 8 2-liter bottles of pineapple-orange Faygo.
-----------
Also, since my last update I've bought, traded for a bunch of stuff:
I got a 12-space rack and some rack gear.
(top to bottom) Akai ME204 arpeggiator, ART PROverb reverb etc., Washburn WSR-42 dual distortion.
 Simmons Trixer drum brain.
I got this Kay bass for $25!! Sounds awesome too!
 Sears Rhythm-matic
 Yamaha EMT-10 sound module
I traded a tub bass for this Kent 12 string. Danny hooked me up with free strings.
--------------------------
Also, I did some sweet work on my MG-1. When they were built the control panel was lined with a rubber foam which turns to gooey, tar-like crud over time. I opened it up to clean it out and figured I should do some mods while I was in there:

The switch allows me to reduce the LFO speed to 25% (ish). And the jack is an INPUT TO THE VCF!!! I can play other shit through that sweet moogy filter now.
Later I am going to do a pitch range mod (increases the range of both oscs. by over an octave up and down!) and a mod to adjust the PWM of the square waves.

| yeah boi!!!! |
[Dec. 11th, 2007|02:23 am] |
I just bought a bass just like this: http://meatexz.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=2773&sid=1efce6bacb2d187d07d3cbda86ba0e36 FOR 25 DOLLARS!!!!!!
I'm so pumped. It's pretty nice. All the knobs are sort of loose and the pickguard is really warped somehow (left in a hot car?), but the action is really tight and all the electronics work. The form of amplification I have left in montevallo to test it with is my rack distortion, so I don't have a real feel for it's tone, but I was at least able to verify that everything works. It's a 70s Kay, so I'm sure it sounds rad.
---------------------------
I also won this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBTOX:IT&item=180188216641&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI
and this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBTOX:IT&item=220178586965&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI
Ok, I seriously need to stop spending money on myself and start getting xmas gifts for foxe.
The first thing: It's like a Yamaha portasound keyboard, but in a half rack. I'm sort of questioning why I bought it. I guess I know why though. It's because I passed on the opportunity to get this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270192976978&_trksid=p3984.cWAT.m240.lVI for $30 after deciding that the sounds weren't for me. I'm working on getting an EMR-1, which is the rhythm friend of the EMT-10. I'm much more interested in it and it's features. I probably just end up turning the EMT-10 around. Dumb dumb dumb.
The other thing: Sears rhythm machine. I've been meaning to start collecting up old analog auto-rhythms. This is the first one that wasn't built into something else. I don't know much more that you can figure out from looking at the auction. These suckers tend to crank out the bass adn have the sort of drum sounds that I love (deep round kick, short bright snare, all-noise hats, etc.)
----------------------
All my gear is in tuscaloosa in my new apartment right now. All of it but the MG-1, my guitar, and my new bass. ...and some rack gear. I just watned to teh rack gear available to stick in my new rack when I get home. I'm trying to go home on thurs. so I can see Digital Leather (check this out jon), but my friends might be having a going away party for me on that day, and I literally can not miss that. It would pretty much be the worst thing I could ever do.
----------------------
Fuck I'm hungry. I wish I had some food. Anything but a hamburger.
----------------------
Why is TV so sexist/racist?
----------------------
OH OH OH OH!!! I forgot about this one. I GOT A SEGA SATURN AT THE THRIFT STORE! No cables, etc. Oh well, it was free. The power supply is generic and david says he knows how to check if a saturn is working without an AV cable (damn proprietary jacks). If it does work, then instead of trying to find the damn cable I'll probably just try to hardwire an RCA cable in.
----------------------
Oh and I finally found a copy of Road Rash 64. Gavin bought it for me as an xmas gift! I haven't had a chance to play it though! I took my n64 to tuscaloosa. Paul said he would play with me later, but he doesn't have a phone and he never came by.
----------------------
Oh, and I have a hamster to watch!! It's totally rad. |

| Awesome distortion/less-than-awesome arpeggiator |
[Nov. 27th, 2007|08:18 pm] |
My new Washburn WSR-42 is great. It's like a short effects chain in it's self. It goes: 7-band EQ, Distortion 1, Distortoin 2. Sounds awesome with the Moog. I haven't had the chance to try anything else through it. Well..other than guitar adn bass.
--------------------------
The arpeggiator on the other hand is not quite what I thought. It seems that instead of playing arpeggios based on a what note or chord you hold, it just plays an arbitrary pattern. Not sure how it picks the root note or anything. Still fumbling my way around with it.
--------------------------
I've also been having trouble sequencing the Trixer with the ER-1. Maybe there is something I don't understand about the ER-1, but it seems like I have to reset the midi notes manually everytime I want to sequence something else with it. 'Shame since it is my only x0x style programmer. |
